China Urges U.S. To Halt Close Air Surveillance After Encounter -- Bloomberg
China urged the U.S. to stop close reconnaissance after a Chinese fighter jet had an encounter with U.S. surveillance aircraft last week.
A U.S. navy P-3 anti-submarine plane and a P-8 patrol aircraft conducted a reconnaissance flight within 220 kilometers (137 miles) of Hainan Island and on Aug. 19, Yang Yujun, a spokesman for China’s Ministry of National Defense, said in a statement posted on the ministry’s website.
China sent a fighter to carry out routine identification and verification of the two U.S. planes, according to the statement. The fighter maintained a safe distance from the U.S. planes and the actions of its pilot were professional, China said.

I'm not picking up vibes
in the US that we're
angry at the Red Chinese
and would love to react
to any incident. What
is the mood in China?

Oldfatslow .... the Chinese have become aggressive and hostile against almost all of their neighbors. This is unprecedented in modern times. My own Chinese contacts are people that I have known for almost 30 years .... and even I am surprised by their hostility towards countries like the Philippines, India, Nepal, etc.. As to their hostility towards the U.S. .... this is a secondary matter .... Beijing does not like the security arrangements that the U.S. has with many of these countries .... this is a complication that Beijing is uncomfortable with. But they have no illusions .... if a conflict between China and a country like Japan/South Korea/Philippines/Taiwan should break out .... they know that it will be only a matter of hours/days before they would also be fighting against U.S. military personnel.
On a side note .... these "confrontations" are also serving an internal Chinese political need. The Chinese economy is now stagnating .... a number of Chinese bond and real estate debt bombs have exploded .... and there is now a real fear that the boom days may be over. If that becomes the case .... the prospect of tens of millions of Chinese not having the same opportunity that many other Chinese have been able to enjoy in the past decade may result in political upheavals that China is not prepared to face today. I know that they are worried about that prospect .... as you know I saw what happened in the 1988/89 when the students protested .... but in today's China the dynamics are completely different .... it will not be students protesting on the streets .... it will be everyone.
