Friday Night Is Movie Night: Tonight's Movie Is Fail Safe (2000) World Nuclear Holocaust

WNU Editor: This was broadcast live .... which is remarkable when one considers TV today. The use of black and white instead of color gives it that 1960s look .... but what I love about this film are the parade of stars who are in it. Sit back .... and enjoy. The Wikipedia entry for Fail-Safe (The Film) is here.

A nuclear war not a happy thought. Hope i wont se one in my life time. Are reading news and there are many conflicts in the world that can escalate and be realy dangerus. Wonder which one that are most likely to cause a big war comperable to the old war like the Korea war, WW2 and the Vietnam war, do any of you have some thought of what is most likely to cause a big war if that the right way to formulate it?

I had to read Pat Frank's
_Alas Babylon_ when I was
a kid because it is set in
a small central Florida town
that survives nuclear war.
The book was written in the
'50s but it still scared my
kids when I made them read it.
And it's not just because we
live close to where the
fictional town was located.

I wonder it it's why I bought
a house with an artesian well.

Good choice oldfatslow. I have an artesian well at my chalet in the Laurentians ... the water does taste different.

Rhaegar,
" do any of you have some thought of what is most likely to cause a big war if that the right way to formulate it?"

There's lot's of reasons, for instance:
1) Any country who thinks they are about to lose completely a conventional war. Candidates; Pakistan, India, Israel, and soon Iran.
2) Misunderstanding of an opponents actions. Candidates;China, India, Pakistan, Russia, US France, Britain
3) Clandestine programs about to be exposed (use it or lose it).
Candidates; Iran, South Africa
The real surprise is that nuclear weapons haven't been used since World WarII.

Sorry, I thought you were asking about nuclear exchanges. With the US withdrawing as the big bad boy on the block you witnessing all the smaller powers remembering their grudges and grievances, old and new aggressive ideologies coming to the fore. Think of the saloon scene in old US westerns. Everybody behaves while the Marshal is around, but once he leaves all it takes is one punch being thrown and the whole place starts fighting.

WNU,
I almost forgot another of to me the grail of war movies, Das Boot. It's not really a movie (condensed German TV mini series I think), but I've enjoyed immensely over the years, the English subtitled version that is.

Thank you. This is very usfull information and i concur with your reasons. Shall try to read me up a bit on conflicts that can be fatal that main stream media is not bothering to cover. Can you recomand my Any conflicts that main stream media are not covering? I know some few conflicts and i know some countries are "ticking bombs" but its interesting to know if i have missed some conflicts or oversoved any details.

Rhaegar,
Entire forests have been cut down to publish the books on why, where, and when war? I approach it in this way, what are the basic reasons for war?
Water
Food
Energy
Money
Ideology/Religion
National sovereignty
Slavery
Look for areas in the world where one or more of these is an issue and you've got possible war right there. People will try to dress up the reasons for conflict in pretty terms, but on close scrutiny they'll really root back to one of the above.
Areas to watch:
Central Asia
Northwest Africa
South China Sea
Korean Peninsula
Falkland Islands
Cyprus and surrounding waters
To name a few

Also think about how Norway would be without the North Sea oil.
