Nato Plans East European Bases To Counter Russian Threat -- The Guardian
Nato chief announces move in response to Ukraine crisis and says alliance is dealing with a new Russian military approach.
Nato is to deploy its forces permanently at new bases in eastern Europe for the first time, in response to the Ukraine crisis and in an attempt to deter Vladimir Putin from causing trouble in the former Soviet Baltic republics, according to its chief.
Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the former prime minister of Denmark, said that next week's Nato summit in Cardiff would overcome divisions within the alliance and agree to new deployments on Russia's borders – a move certain to trigger a strong reaction from Moscow.
He also outlined moves to boost Ukraine's security, "modernise" its armed forces, and help the country counter the threat from Russia.

My Comment: Such a deployment will be dependent on Germany agreeing to such a new policy .... but I just do not see that happening right now.

Bulgaria has no land border with Russia, it is one of the most Russophile countries in EU (former Russian ambassador called us their Trojan horse in the EU), and it is crucial for the South Stream gas pipe, which could help Russia go around Ukraine and make its gas shipments to Europe independent of its relations with Kiev, all of which factors make a recent development quite telling about how attitudes and behavior towards Russia have changed since the start of Putin's invasion of Ukraine: yesterday Bulgaria did something unprecedented in its history since the First World War, when it repelled a Russian invasion in Dobruja - a Defense Ministry report clearly identified Russia as a threat to Bulgaria, and accused it of waging information war, aimed at eroding Bulgarian institutions and sovereignty. If something like that is happening in Bulgaria, which is under no direct threat of invasion despite the hundreds of thousands of Russians, who own property here, and visit the Black Sea seaside every summer, then I can only imagine what is going on in Russia's close neighbors which have a long history of mistrust and animosity with Moscow.
