Russia Announces Military Exercises In Kuril Islands Claimed By Japan -- Moscow Times/Reuters

Russia began military exercises in the Kuril Islands in the Pacific Ocean, a Defense Ministry spokesman said on Tuesday, a move likely to anger Japan, which also lays claim to them.

"Exercises began involving military units in the region, which have been deployed to the Kuril Islands," Colonel Alexander Gordeyev, a spokesman for Russia's Eastern Military District, told news agency Interfax.

He said more than 1,000 troops, five Mi-8AMTSh attack helicopters and 100 other pieces of military hardware would be involved in the manoeuvres.

The dispute has strained relations Japan and Russia since World War II, when Soviet forces occupied the four islands at the southern end of the Kuril chain. Japan says the islands are part of its territory and wants Moscow to hand them over.

Update: Russia begins military exercises in islands also claimed by Japan -- World Bulletin

My Comment: Japan has supported Western moves and sanctions on Russia because of Ukraine .... this is Russia's response to Japan.

Japan did that during 1 war.

The Russian fleet had an arduous voyage around the whole world (1). They were in a pair state of repair. They may have still be loaded with coal and thus low in the water affecting their maneuverability (2). This critique I read in Military History magazine I think. I don't have it still so I can't give you the issue #. I think these are valid points.

The Russian force on land was a polyglot force at the end of a very long supply line. During the last major battle the commanding general was sick. From what I remember he was not incompetent. His initial disposition were good. However he responded to event sluggishly. His subordinated were not that good for one reason or another.

The Russian forces in the East are still at the end of a long supply line although things might be better in that regard. The Russian army is probably more cohesive than the Czarist army. I would bet the Russian bench is deeper when it comes to general officers, staff officers and junior officers.

If Japan went against Japan and opened up hostilities, America might not come to its' aid and probably would not under Obama. China would see this and they might join in.They are not as weak as they were under the Qing. China want the islands not only for possible oil , fisheries or sea floor mining. they want than as an advanced line of defense for their east coast.

I would count on anything.

Am I becoming more negative about the state of the world or is the world really hurdling closer to Armageddon with each day?

Well, if The Hamptons and Marthas Vinyard get it first from Al Qaeda, the Russia and, Chinese or whoever, I don't care if they hit the rest of America.

Why worry? We are in the same boat and there is a political party that is burning said boat until they get what they want.

Open borders, bank bailouts, no place to visit overseas even if the middle class had $4 to visit.
