Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has won his country's first direct presidential election.

With almost all the votes counted, Mr Erdogan had won about 52%, against 38% for main rival Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu.

The huge margin of victory means there is no need for a run-off.

Mr Erdogan, who has vowed to bolster the power of the president, promised supporters a "social reconciliation period", saying: "Let's leave the old discussions in the old Turkey."

He added in the speech in Ankara: "Today, not only those who love us, but also those who don't have won. Today Turkey has won."

The veteran leader, who has spent three terms as prime minister, is revered by supporters for boosting the economy and giving a voice to conservatives.

Erdogan's election secures ISIS's northern flank and supply line. Erdogan dreams of living in a new Topkapi.

Seeing Erdogan elected is like living a nightmare.

It is the same waking nightmare as when Hugo Chavez was elected and started his presidential term on February 2, 1999.

It is like watching a semi bear down on you and there is nothing you can do about it.

Aiziano Smith i concour. Erdagon will in worst case get sharia laws in Turkey, if that happens i wont travel there anymore. Its a shame that this happened, since Turkey has a big potential but there are still many conservative muslims there who want sharia laws. So i hope Turkey will become more secular. Thats my view on this situration.

Getting only 52% of the vote was a surprise .... I thought it was going to be higher. He has enjoyed the perception that he is responsible for Turkey's economic boom .... but if things go south (which they always do) .... I suspect that he will not react kindly to his declining support .... especially among his base in the countryside.

Hugo Chavez with an Islamic fundamentalist ideology is my description of who Erdogan is.
