Al Qaeda Acknowledges 'Mistakes', But Denies That It Is In Decline

Decline: With an unprecedented wave of extremists pledging allegiance to rival Islamic extremist group ISIS (pictured), Al Qaeda is struggling to recruit new members to its cause and is even suspected of claiming responsibility for failed attacks it did not actually carry out in order to appear more active

Al Qaeda Denies Decline, Acknowledges 'Mistakes' by Its Branches -- New York Times/Reuters

(Reuters) - Al Qaeda dismissed as "lies" a U.S. assessment that it is in decline, but a defiant online message issued by the network on Sunday made no mention of the ultra-hardline Islamic State group widely seen as its rival for the leadership of global jihad.

"Whatever slip-ups or errors (regional branches)...may have committed are limited in number in the midst of mountains of good deeds and successes," said Hossam Abdul Raouf, an Egyptian veteran of the militant group. Did not the Shia phenomena start in Libya?

They went on to conquer Egypt in 969 AD. Their Caliphate was defeated in 1169. they were defeated and that makes them chumps.

Or does it?

They spawned the Assassins.
And there has not been a year that we have not talked about Iran since 1979 (35 years ago).

Okay that is a large span of history. Point is that movement and organisations can regenerate even after being moribund for long periods of time.

Zawahiri could die peacefully in his sleep. Afterwards a new more dynamic, charismatic, and wiser (as in more intelligent or cunning) leader could take over and revive Al Qaeda in the next 3 to 5 years.

Al Qaeda is not dead until they are run into the ground and any survivors do not want to use the name or continue to use terror.

What if a Haqqani took it over and ran it separate, but parallel to the Haqqani network?
