Islamic State Poised To Overrun Iraq's Anbar Province

Islamic State Fighters Are Threatening To Overrun Iraq’s Anbar Province -- Washington Post

BAGHDAD — Islamic State militants are threatening to overrun a key province in western Iraq in what would be a major victory for the jihadists and an embarrassing setback for the U.S.-led coalition targeting the group.

A win for the Islamic State in Anbar province would give the militants control of one of the country’s most important dams and several large army installations, potentially adding to their abundant stockpile of weapons. It would also allow them to establish a supply line from Syria almost to Baghdad and give them a valuable position from which to launch attacks on the Iraqi capital.

My Comment: After the fall of Anbar province, I am willing to bet that the Islamic State will then focus their energies on taking over and consolidating their forces in the Sunni regions around Baghdad, and after that .... probably Baghdad itself.

For practical purposes, Anbar has fallen.

You might want to read The War Nerds take on it.

Word of warning, The. War Nerd is irreverent, brutally honest, does not suffer fools gladly, and his writings are highly addictive.

Gary Brecher is not a forthright person and not as smart as he thinks he is IMHO.

I don't expect ISIS to be able to take Baghdad.

I expect them to be able to take 30% of Baghdad at best

War Nerd is an interesting site. I believe that Baghdad will fall, but not necessarily by direct assault. WNU had an excellent prediction in an earlier post for how ISIS may go about taking Baghdad. Iran is ISIS's main enemy and greatest danger, while the ISIS's is Iran. Both apparently have grandiose international plans that cannot be pursued while the current state of affairs exist. They have to settle this soon.

I sometimes agree .... sometimes disagree with Gary Brecher (War Nerd). I guess it depends on the topic. I just wish he posted more often.

A case could be made to get the hell out of the way and let them fight.

There is a certain type of person that is always extolling the multi-ethnic, multi-cultural virtues. Using such terms they talk about the wonderful mosaic and talk about a tossed salad (instead of asimulation).

Here we have a mosaic of Yazidis, Christians, Turkmen alawites and more being destroyed and the same people sit on their hands and are very indignant if you point anything out.

You have to consider if poeple are sitting this one out because the wargamed it out or if they rather be do something else.
