Sweden has beefed up its military presence amid reports of 'a crippled Russian submarine' off its coast.
In a throw back to the Cold War, Swedish ships, helicopters and troops are scouring the waters off Stockholm following reports that a Russian submarine might have had mechanical problems while on a secret mission in the archipelago.
The operation began after Sweden's ministry said it was given a reliable tip-off about 'foreign underwater activity' off the country's coast in the Baltic Sea.

Do you have an opinion about this case? If the sub is Russian will that escalate things? Is there a small risk that Russia is planning war against Sweden in the near future? Since Gotland is a very important strategic island which could be very usfull for Russia since if they deploy missiles ther they could reach most of the baltic states and other places in Europe.
Russia is most emphatically _not_ planning war against Sweden in the near future. Even Barack the Feckless couldn't ignore that.
They are, as was stated, almost certainly trying to replace old spy gear and had a mechanical failure. Part of me hopes they get caught, but part of me feels for their predicament...

Thank you for the link Jay. I heard about this western intel operation a long time ago, but I have never had the chance to read such a detailed report as this one.
There is another one, and of course, two seminal books on Cold War games in Sweden and Finland, sadly in Swedish and Finnish.

What makes me "sad" is how well the Cold War Hysteria plays in the Media, with no acknowledgement of the dirty, dirty games we played and still play.
