Obama: I’ll Only Send U.S. Ground Troops To The Mideast If The Islamic State Gets a Nuke

Obama: I’ll Send Ground Troops To Mideast If ISIS Gets A Nuke -- NRO

President Obama said he’d break his promise to keep U.S. ground troops out of the fight in Iraq and Syria if the Islamic State gets its hands on a nuclear weapon.

At the G-20 summit in Australia on Monday, the president responded to comments made by Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Martin Dempsey, who said last week the Pentagon was “considering” deploying ground troops to directly confront the brutal terrorist group.

Obama played down the general’s assertion, but also drew a red line over a frightening hypothetical. “There are always circumstances in which the United States might need to deploy U.S. ground troops,” he said. “If we discover that ISIL had gotten possession of a nuclear weapon . . . then yes, you can anticipate that not only would Chairman Dempsey recommend me sending U.S. ground troops to get that weapon out of their hands, but I would order it.”

My Comment: It looks like the White House is starting to get serious (maybe).

Wouldn't sending ground troops AFTER they get a nuke be a little too late? What an odd statement.

Odd is an understatement Black Knight. This is a strategy based on reacting to events .... rather than making sure that they do not arise. But on the other hand .... President Obama's reluctance to get involved n another middle Eastern war is understandable .... there is no end game to such a conflict unless one is willing to spend hundreds of billions of dollars, scores of lives, and a commitment that will last decades. But if the Islamic State does get their hands on such a weapon .... and use it in a western city .... my betting is that such a sequence of events will then play out.

Is a good thing he didn't say weapons of mass destruction.

Phil,

There was the Russian airlift & truck convoy from Iraq to Syria in 2003.

Supposedly, it was relief supplies due to a dam bursting in Syria.

A small convoy left Syria from Iraq ahead of inspectors in 2012.

Did they take everything. ISIS could get something.

When the stuff (WMDs) was there but it can be denied by 1/3rd of the population at home is among the greatest deception operations of all time. it is worth whole corps for the next 1/2 century.
