Pakistani Army: 1,200 Militants Killed During Five-Month Offensive -- Reuters

(Reuters) - The Pakistani army has killed 1,200 suspected militants in an anti-Taliban offensive during the past five months, seriously reducing the group's ability to carry out attacks, senior officers said on Sunday during a rare trip to the conflict zone.

The ongoing operation has targeted the militant stronghold in North Waziristan, a mountainous region that borders Afghanistan and has acted as a staging post for deadly attacks in both Afghanistan and Pakistan. The offensive was launched as Western forces began withdrawing from Afghanistan.

In the center of Mir Ali, the second largest town in the region, there was hardly a building untouched by the fighting.

The weapons look old.

So it is a dog & pony show?

I thought perhaps mistakenly that as the U.S. bows out that Pakistan might get serious about setting up a puppet government/proxy in Afghanistan. This would mean getting rid of players that they cannot control through various non military inducements.

It is my understanding that Pakistan provided training and logistical support to the Taliban in its' early days. So they have tried to play kingmaker before.

Dog and pony, yes. They'll try to go back to their live and let live policy with the Taliban. Their military and especially intelligence services are riddled with Islamists, that yes worked with the Taliban from the beginning. The problem they have now is the Islamists may feel strong enough for overthrowing the government. The dog and pony is to keep the western aid money coming up to the last moment before the corrupt upper guys try to make a run for it.

Well get our guys out. Sooner or later Iran or India will have to go to war with an Islamicist Pakistan.

Problem solved.

the is not one thing constructive that the U.S. will do to aid in minorities in Pakistan, Christian or Hindu.

The 15% Shia minority will be grateful until they got the U.S.. then their children will cause all sort of harm.

I hate to advocate for the resettling of refugees form Pakistan to the U.S. because instead of settling 10,000 or 100,000 Christian the Pelousy's of the world would make sure no Christians or Hindus but million of Shia who would harm us.

Pull out and let Russia, China, India and Iran deal with it.

They don't like Pax America, so be it.

Aizino,
I agree on getting our guys out now. There is no real strategy there now and we have only become a good line up of targets.
