WNU,
You know this sure doesn't seem to be your typical whack some of your internal opponents with the old "anti-corruption campaign", that gets rid of a few and scares the rest. This seems to be glimmerings of a full scale internal struggle and I don't think we are seeing the end of it by any means.
China is going through another period of reform and modernization, Military, Governance, Economic, Legal,
Those onside are being left alone, those in the way, resisting the changes, are being removed. The Officially Tolerated Corruption of the 80's, 90's and Aught's, is now being used to "purge" the resistance, rather than the old Anti-Communist claims.
Publius and a few others have pointed out in this blog that there are big changes happening in China. I was suppose to be there in August, but because of my mom's injury in May my trip was cancelled. My read of the situation is that a purge has been ongoing for the past year ... if not more. Hundreds of billions of dollars are missing, and even more is rumored to be offshore. Everyone in China knows that there is corruption in the country, but reports of massive bank accounts for certain families is shocking everyone.
Personally I am not shocked .... the stories that I can tell ....
The following article from early this year sums up how much the situation has gotten out of hand .... and why people like Chinese President Xi and his technocrats are now clamping down. http://www.moneynews.com/Personal-Finance/China-offshore-BVI-wealth/2014/01/30/id/549867/
WNU,
This reminds me a little of Stalin's purge of the old Bolsheviks. Which also along with the Ukraine reminds of Kaganovich, surely that sob is dead.
A little more on this subject:

corruption in communist countries is endemic and mostly overlooked in that it is a charge that can be leveled against anyone and always be true. Since ideology is such a dangerous topic in communist countries it is a rare instance someone is charged with "deviation". When it does happen it is sign of serious internal struggle.
Lazar Kaganovich .... that is a name that I have not heard for a very long time. If my memory serves me right, he died in 1991.
Here is a little tidbit of information on what that monster did .... and it is not in the western history books. He was the one who organized the collection of all grains and food supplies in Ukraine that resulted in the famine of 1932-33 .... but he specifically stated that Jewish families would be exempted from these confiscations. As a result .... as my father always pointed out .... everyone was hungry and/or starving to death .... but not those who went to synagogue. Yes .... even though these monsters were Communists .... religion still played a role for some of them .... Kaganovich being one of them.
But what goes around comes around ..... when the Nazis invaded .... many of these Ukrainians were still bitter and were more than happy to volunteer to be prison guards in the death camps .... in their eyes it was pay-back time. Fortunately .... my father never bought into that hate (he blamed Stalin and the Communists for the famine) .... but many Ukrainians specifically blamed the Jews .... hence producing another Holocaust.
James .... even to this day .... the bitterness of the famine still remains, and some of the worst places for antisemitism is in western Ukraine.
As for Richard Fernandez ... he is a remarkable commentator .... his analysis is almost always spot on and he is always a must read for me when he posts a new story. Case in point .... his analysis on Chinese corruption and the state is spot on.
WNU,
I've often wondered why Kaganovich survived Stalin when so many others (Yagoda, Yezhov, etc) didn't.
Damn good question James. Stalin is the only one who can answer that, and I have no interest in going to Hell to find him and to ask him that question.
Вы получили это право! Спокойной ночи.
Спокойной ночи
Now that is the first Russian phrase that my GF learned. :)
I think the real story here is Mr Yongkang's toothache... It looks painful!
