Crimea Hit By Ukraine's Decision To Limit Electricity Supplies To The Peninsula

Crimea Hit By Blackout Amid Mounting Ukraine Electricity Crisis -- Financial Times

Widespread blackouts hit Crimea after Ukraine cut electricity supplies to the Russian-occupied peninsula of 2m people, highlighting a mounting energy crisis in the war-torn country.

Power was partially restored by noon on Wednesday following widespread outages earlier in the day, according to officials in Crimea.

“After the cut-off, the Ukrainian side explained to us that Crimea supposedly exceeded its supply limits, caused . . . by a plunge in generation,” Russia’s Interfax news agency quoted Sergey Yegorov, Crimea’s energy minister, as saying.

Volodymyr Demchyshyn, energy minister of Ukraine, which supplies most of Crimea’s electricity, blamed the peninsula for exceeding electricity consumption limits at a time when the country was forced to ration power.

My Comment: The big worry is not Crimea but Kiev's threats that they may cut electricity supplies to rebel held regions .... Ukraine threatens to cut off power to rebel-held regions if usage not curbed (Reuters). Such a cut-off will bring about an unmanageable humanitarian crisis to the conflict .... and all of it in the middle of winter.

A little message was sent, perhaps to the negotiators in Minsk.

That .... and a desire to spread a little Christmas cheer.

What is the difference between Russia threatening to cut of the natural gas pipelines and Kiev threatening to cutoff the electricity?

Even with all the bluster Ukraine is receiving natural gas supplies from Russia, and the rebel regions in eastern Ukraine are getting electricity. They both threaten and they both make public announcements that they will cut-off supplies .... but they do not. As I said .... the humanitarian crisis would explode exponentially. Unfortunately .... both sides are now at a point where they are looking for an excuse to cut off any and all energy supplies to the other, and it would not surprise me if such a sequence of events do happen in January.
