Adrienne LaFrance, The Atlantic: America's Top Killing Machine
WNU Editor: Wow .... car crashes killed 33,561 people in the U.S. 2012, while firearms killed 32,251 people in 2011. That is way too many firearms AND car deaths. Hmmm .... maybe the U.S. should adopt gun AND car control. But with 70% of the adult American population owning guns and 90% driving .... I doubt that both efforts will succeed.

Most gun deaths are gang related. Are we going to take away guns, because a small group of people cause the majority of these deaths? Ask why again and we should look at a pareto analysis
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Pareto_principle
So if these same gang bangers started running people over with cars we should ban private ownership of cars?
That would be the same reasoning method.
It should be noted that car deaths are down because people are not driving as much. It has something to do with the economy.
And look it is the Atlantic magazine.
It is not like they are doing a specious 1/2 truth analysis as part of a Leftist agenda.
This is just coming at a "problem" from angle since SCOTUS has shot them down on ownership & definition well related militia
They do not teach journalism grads stuff like 6 sigma or basic reasoning.
Also helps to move the agenda along by including suicides.
I really loath, and despise, the American gun culture and the notion that it is their 'constitutional right' which makes me laugh since that was only ever meant for militias, and it just got twisted around.
But... I also laugh at the idea of gun control. You can't have adequate gun control in a society that is so prevalent on firearms. It just can't happen.
Prohibition era is a lesson for anyone who thinks they can control something that is so common.
I live in Canada .... I keep a shotgun in my chalet up north because of bears near my home. I do not have a gun in my Montreal home .... there is no need. In Moscow .... I keep a gun (a "gift" from my uncle during the 1993 Russian crisis) .... but I also have no need for it, and I will probably get rid of it when I go back in the next month or two. But ... if I was living in the US .... I would probably keep a gun because everyone else has a gun. My brother lives in a nice part of San Mateo south of San Francisco .... he does not have a gun .... but everyone around him does own a gun. The idea that these liberals .... and they are far left liberals .... will be willing to give up their guns .... no way ... it is not going to happen. It is definitely part of the U.S. culture .... on both the right and on the left.
If you take out the # of people killed by guns by gang members, the U.S. homicide is not much different than Britain
Britain's homicide rate since the 1850s has been pretty much flat. There was a slight bulge experience by all at least English speaking countries that by could be explained young age cohort.
England passed restrictive gun laws around the turn of the 19th century. I don't see a drop off in the homicide rate. It was basically flat.
They passed the 2nd amendment. None of the founders or legislators started buzzing about people owning guns but were not enrolled or drilling with a recognized state militia. they would know would they not?
I do not see much difference between a Hot Trod and gun ownership today.
I would rather go shopping, out to eat, to the movies without a gun. I have all my life. I also hunt and target shoot. Not much point in hunting without target practice. Hunting is a tradition. So many who are against it have never raised livestock or farmed. They take everything for granted.
The best defense for protection is to choose your neighborhood. A certain cadre of politicians are dead set on taking all local taxes. That will decide school, police protection once & for all. Basically, they want to make every country like Indianapolis. That is you cannot internally vote with your feet. Choose your neighborhood, 2nd build good relations with your neighbors. Your 3rd best thing is personal protection.
Police simply do not have to respond to a 911 call at all. One family called 911 to report a pimp, who had kidnapped their daughter & a friend off a Columbus, Ohio street. they found their daughter and the pimp and the police did not show up until 20 or 30 minutes later and arrested them.
The police do not have to show up.
I agree on the need to choose a proper location. That is why I like living in the country .... a completely different mindset over living in the city. Fortunately .... all the places that I have lived and am living .... I know all of my neighbors, my homes are like Fort Knox, and the community around me is safe. there is no need for a gun if you have that in place.
If people want to leave a poorly run city, the politicians will chase them ("regional tax-base sharing"). So I don't know how much longer choosing your neighbors will last or your police force.

Pisses me off.
WNU,
How do you know you don't need it?
Because James .... if I do need a gun/rifle/etc..., I can get one very very quickly (especially in Moscow .... Canada is different). But you are right .... and everyone has told me the same thing .... when you actually do need a gun .... it has to be at that moment in time .... an hour later could be a lifetime.
