Poll: 40% In The U.S. Believe The Afghan War Was Worth It

ABC News: Post-ABC poll: Support for Afghanistan war rises as combat mission ends

Update: At the End of Afghanistan War, Most Doubt its Value (ABC News)

My Comment:What probably has helped in the rise of the positive numbers is that the main stream media has basically ignored the story .... so the constant drumbeat of negative news has not come into play. As to what is my take on the entire campaign .... was the Afghan war worth it? In the beginning it was definitely necessary, but after routing the Taliban the priority among the U.S. and its coalition partners was that they should have gotten out within a year .... instead of resorting to nation building and maintaining a permanent military presence. Transforming a 7th century society into the 21rst century coupled with imposing certain western ideals is not an easy task for outsiders to do .... change has to always come from within .... and sometimes (if not most of the time) ... this transformation will not occur. If this was realized in the beginning .... a lot of money .... and certainly a lot of lives .... would not have been lost.

Was it worth it to the Afghan people? It perhaps gave them hope, for a time, but now to return to hopelessness? Women, fired up to think they could advance in their society such that they tried and did will now return to what was before, once the Taliban take over of course.

If all that money and effort had gone into "nation building" at home the US would be a better place today.

Was it worth it to the US government and war industry, yes, to the people of the US no.

If the U.S. had gone in, defeated the d Taliban and left in a year:

1) The Taliban would have been back 1 to 4 in Kabul in years. The Democrats would capitalize on it in 2004.

2) Colin Powell would have invoked the Pottery Barn Rule and left the Bush Administration in a bigger huff than he did.

3) Various Leftists would point to Powell's pottery barn rule e and try to sue Bush & the U.S government in the Hague.

4) The ISI would still be calling some shots and after heart to heart talk would tell Mullah Omar & Osama that they owe Pakistan one.

The run chart not only shows the effect of a biased media, but of administration that 1/2 asses it.
