Washington Times: Saudi Arabia building 600-mile ‘Great Wall’ to keep out Islamic State

WNU Editor: Saudi Arabia criticized Israel when they built their wall to keep out Palestinian terrorists a decade ago .... and now they are building one themselves. If you live long enough .... you can see all the contradictions that life can bring.

So...

Are they building a fence, or a wall? Because if the former is true, then a simple pickup plowing through it will knock it down, or is it going to be a proper solid wall?

Either way, regardless, this is a PR win for ISIS, sadly.

Ha! Took my words out of my mouth Mr WNU.. Read the headline and first thought was... They build a wall to stop terror and the world doesn't give a flying truck!! Ahhh the hypocrisy, much like how Egypt has been demolishing houses in Rafah and nobody cares.. That started with a 500mt exclusion zone which went to 1km, then 2km and now reports are that Rafah is to be razed and relocated... Can you hear the silence of the world when Jews aren't involved???!..

But back to the point, it's not necessary to have a solid wall to stop attacks, even a solid wall is easily breached these days with some fertiliser and the willing aka stupid.. (It is never mentioned that the virgins are women or human!!)

Most of the fences around Israel are easily breached in the traditional sense, however, they are all smart fences interconnected.

I met recently a young Israeli girl in England at our local Rabbis house for Shabbat lunch, she was just out of the IDF and now at Uni, she was assigned the Southern border with Egypt watching a monitor (not allowed to take your eyes from the screen for the shift for anything, any conversation with others, her eyes remained fixed to the monitor), each girl had a 2km section to monitor with very impressive sensors (she wouldn't detail all of them), suffice to say, they all had direct contact with the Caracal battalion (lots of very hot sabra's with Assault rifles) the moment anything came up.

Most of the time it was drug runners she saw intercepted. Point being, with a bit of money, you don't need a solid wall to be effective, just good electronics strung out..

+plus, in an all out war, how do you get your own forces over the border with a solid wall??

Same could be said for fences... What, are the Saudi's just going to drive through them? :P

Israel is somewhat of an exception to the rule but not completely, for if you build a wall you are losing and losing in many different ways.
The big problem the Saudis will have is the integrity of the people who are in charge of the fence. How resistant are they to bribery, intimidation, or ideology?

Nah, you just open them and drive thru - you have loads of gates :p

Bang on James, I wouldn't trust the Saudis manning their own border fence like this young girl I met. I'd be happy trusting her with my family, true dedication...

Saudi's... Good luck y'all!!!

As for wall or fence, definitely smart fence. When you have desert for as far as the eye can see in both directions a wall is just not feasible irrespective if it's in Israel or KSA.

Yes it's easily breached but if you have good electronics they won't get far..

Just actually read the WT article, according to them it's the following:

Construction of the security apparatus began in September and will include five layers of fencing, watch towers and night-vision

That's my point, I'm sure they'll have gates/doors for a solid wall too... :P
