Zachary Keck, National Interest: 5 U.S. Weapons of War Russia Should Fear

WNU Editor: Being one who grew up and lived on the other side (Russia) for most of my life .... I can say this without hesitation ..... there was only one U.S. weapon that we all feared .... America's nuclear arsenal.

Your perspective as someone who lived in Russia is very interesting. Unlike in Russia we who lived/live in America now and during the Cold War I had much more than the nuclear arsenal of the Russians to fear. All of us knew or should have known that in any conventional war with the Soviet Union we (the Americans and our "allies") were no match for Soviet forces and would easily be defeated by the vastly superior, better led, and better trained Soviet forces who had better trained and more committed allies.

In other words we all knew or should have known, at least those of who were not brain washed by the ridiculous anti-American propaganda that continually then and now overstates American power for the purpose of demonizing it, that the ONLY way we would survive let alone prevail in a war against vastly superior conventional Soviet forces would be based upon our nuclear arsenal.

Since anti-American propaganda was much less pervasive then than it is now, most of us understood this including our leadership. Now fewer of us actually grasp this. While the Soviet side needed only fear America's nuclear arsenal, America had far more to fear as the Soviet conventional forces were far superior.

Today little has changed. The Russians have a huge edge in cyber warfare capabilities and a huge edge in tactical nuclear weapons. In any hot war, Russian cyber attacks would likely render the supposed high tech US weapons blind, deaf, dumb, and about as useful as large paper weights. This would allow the Russians complete dominance of the battlefield. Furthermore Russian cyber attacks could finish off anything not taken out by the cyber attacks. Additionally Russia would be left clear to attack the American mainland with strategic nuclear weapons with impunity as cyber attacks will have rendered America incapable of responding.

I will reiterate what I have said elsewhere many times. America's choosing to intricate itself in the Ukrainian situation was/is the dumbest foreign policy move a major power has ever made in world history. We should be doing ANYTHING and EVERY THING necessary to extricate ourselves by ANY and ALL means necessary.

Finally, while the article is interesting the author makes a number of mistakes in his assertions but this post has run long and specifics can be saved for another discussion. Essentially in summary the author overstates American capabilities in a number of areas while understating corresponding Russian capabilities.

B.Poster. We were never worried about a NATO/U.S. invasion .... I guess it is because Russia has a long history of being invaded .... and all of those invasions failed. I can say the same for today .... no one in Russia is really worried about a NATO/U.S. invasion, and on the flip side no one in Russia is really thinking of invading Europe. But .... Ukraine is a different story .... it has always been a different story .... and it has more to do with the fact that there are many Russians who live there. But even with this situation .... no one in Russia really wants to go to war to defend eastern Ukraine .... and no one in Russia wants to own the clean-up/reconstruction bill when the war is finally over. Everyone knows that this is a conflict that has to be resolved by the Ukrainians themselves .... but it will not happen as long as the nationalists have the influence that they have in Kiev, and as long as the U.S. and a few European countries continue to support this policy. My prediction .... Kiev will continue to hope for a military victory .... but it will not happen, and definitely not now.

War News Updates Editor: I think we are largely in agreement that this was/is an exceedingly dumb idea for the USA and a few European countries to intricate themselves in the Ukrainian situation. If Russia does not really want to go to war over Eastern Ukraine, then perhaps the messaging put forth by the Russians is not to be believed. It appears they will be willing to do anything possible to keep in place an Eastern Ukraine that is friendly to them and to control the Naval base in Crimea.

Even if the US and Western Europe are willing to go to war with Russia over Ukraine, the US/NATO would have virtually no chance of prevailing. As such, the prudent course of action is to extricate oneself from such a situation as quickly as possible by any and all means necessary. As someone told me many years ago, "when you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is to STOP DIGGING!!"

WNU: I agree with your prediction that the Kiev government will continue to hope for a military victory that will not happen. The conventional wisdom among Western European governments, the US government, and much of the world it seems is the Russian military is actively assisting the rebels. If the conventional wisdom is correct, there is zero possibility of a Kiev victory. If the conventional wisdom is incorrect, while the chances of a Kiev victory are not zero, there chances are very, very slim.

If there were to be a military victory, it would likely be by the "rebels." Involvement by the US only serves to delegitimize the Kiev government, serves to accelerate Russian involvement, which only serves to accelerate the probably inevitable defeat of the Kiev government.

One has to wonder about the sanity of officials in Kiev, Washington, and Western European capitols who insist upon pursuing policies that have no chance of success. Like I said earlier when in a hole the first step is to STOP DIGGING!!
