Debaltseve is a strategic rail hub and road link between the major rebel-held cities of Donetsk and Luhansk. The town is the epicenter of fierce fighting as Russian-backed rebels try to pinch off a pocket of Ukrainian government forces stationed there. Trapped between the battle lines are thousands of civilians who are trying desperately to evacuate to safer areas
