A Plea Deal In The 'Works' For Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl?

FOX News: White House trying to get Bergdahl to strike a deal?

Retired Army Lt. Col. Tony Shaffer claimed Thursday that the White House is trying to get Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl to strike a deal in order to avoid a potentially embarrassing trial for the administration.

"They want this to go away as quietly as possible," Shaffer, a former military intelligence officer, said on Fox News' "America's Newsroom."

President Obama faced criticism for trading Bergdahl, accused by some of deserting, for five Taliban leaders being held at Guantanamo Bay. Shaffer claims there were other options on the table that might have had "better success ... without giving up five adversaries." He added that "these guys are going to be going back to a rock star welcome and return to combat" when conditions on their release are lifted in the coming months.

WNU Editor: I thought that this case was going to be resolved months ago .... but apparently it is still ongoing. Why is this the case .... only the White House really knows.

Now this is interesting. The administration is trying to get him to plea to something (anything) less than desertion, but Bergdahl and his team are apparently saying no, feeling he should walk free and clean or very close to it. They must think that the administration cannot take the publicity as is, or they have something ( in hard evidence) that they can hold over the administration's head for a golden deal.

How likely is it for the Obama adminstration to cave in its' last year as the election season heats up and torrents of news might possibly cover up Bergdahl walking free?

"How likely is it for the Obama adminstration to cave in its' last year as the election season heats up", I don't know Aizino, but how they handle this will tell us a lot about what they're really thinking behind the scenes. What should have been a relatively minor issue has been turned by their own efforts into a large headache politically. They can't charge him with desertion without being questioned about trading for deserter with 5 known enemy leaders. They can't rely on the military (his ex comrades and commanders) to back in a lesser charge and they can't just let him walk completely free. So they need for him to cop a plea on a lesser charge, but apparently he's aware of all this and ain't playing. Now this is where it gets interesting, how they handle it from here on out should tell us what their assessment of how solid is the support of their allies in the press and Democratic party. Which in my opinion is starting to erode noticeably. But that's just opinion, let's keep watch of what they'll do.
