Dear WNU Editor

I've found this speech by Stephen Cohen on current US Russian relations. I was wondering if your interested.

Thank you Catholic Dragoon for the link .... I am listening to it now.

I met Stephen Cohen in Moscow about 10 years ago. It was a small party in the building where I have my condo, and we started talking. He was surprised by my English, and I was surprised by his Russian .... we also disagreed on a number of issues.

Flash forward to today .... he is more pessimistic on the current situation than I am. But his belief that we are now in a new Cold War cannot be discounted, because the trend is definitely moving in that direction.

Sorry to ask but what issues did you two disagree on? And where did you two share the same view/opinion?

We disagreed on the importance that President Reagan had in speeding up the break-up of the Soviet Union .... I credit Reagan and Pope John Paul II for providing an enormous morale boost to the dissidents in the east, Stephen Cohen does not. Where we share the same opinion is western perception of Russia .... specifically U.S. altitudes. In short .... the U.S. and some in the West are still stuck in the 1980s without realizing that Russia has changed.
