Why Are The Russians Using A Former Secret Norwegian Submarine Base?

Elisabeth Braw, Newsweek: The Secret Norwegian Submarine Base Being Rented by the Russians

Norway is ruing the day it sold off a key submarine base near the Russian border and now, with President Putin flexing his muscles in the region, there is growing alarm among Nato chiefs that the west has left itself woefully unprotected.

Only six years ago, Norwegian politicians decided that Russia no longer posed a significant threat and that it was time to sell its top secret base called Olavsvern, which was hewn into a mountain and equipped with the most sophisticated electronics available. It’s located near the small town of Ramfjord near Norway’s border with Russia.

WNU Editor: I doubt that the Russians are going to send their submarines to the base .... but as a port of call for intelligence and/or other ships .... a blessing. As to the mindset of the Norwegian authorities who OK'd the deal .... I can only imagine.

Norway like most Western European nations views the US as the enemy and as a "strategic competitor." As such, they believe/understand that in any military conflict between Russia and the so called "west" America is going to bear the brunt of Russia's military response. They likely view this as a win/win. When America is weakened or better yet, from their perspective destroyed, they come out ahead or so they think.

I wonder how well the Russians have inspected their investment?

How is the U.S. a strategic competitor to Norway?

The riling socialist party might see the U.S. as a competitor in the arena of ideals.

If course the socialist parties of Sweden and Norway see their population as a competitor or threat to their hold on power, so they import masses of Muslims.

If you can't consistently win over the masses of the voters than exchange, dilute or replace.

Alzino,

While they do work with the US from time to time on areas of interest, Norway like all Western European nations and the EU leadership view the US as a strategic competitor. In general US leadership does not grasp this.

The last two paragraphs are spot on. The same applies to the US with uncontrolled immigration from south of its borders.
