Wall Street Journal: Islamic State Fighters Launch Offensive in Iraq Province
Offensive Comes Just Weeks After Extremist Groups Suffered Major Defeat.
BAGHDAD—Islamic State launched an offensive near the capital of Iraq’s Anbar province on Wednesday, attacking three villages and signaling that the Baghdad government’s campaign to retake control of the region from the extremist group would be arduous and bloody.
Just weeks after they were driven from Tikrit in a major victory for the Iraqi government, militants of the radical Sunni Muslim group raided the villages of Albu Ghanim and Albu Sowda and carried out car bombings in Sejariya near the provincial capital Ramadi. Dozens of unarmed civilians were killed, tribal leaders said in what they described as a “massacre.”
