A model of Russia's proposed supercarrier.
Jeremy Binder, Business Insider: Russia wants to build a supercarrier, and it's a total waste
Russia's plan to expand its navy through the construction of an aircraft supercarrier is pretty much a tremendous waste, Nicholas Varangis of the Atlantic Council argues.
Supercarriers, by nature, allow a country to project power throughout the world.
An individual US supercarrier, for instance, can carry 70 aircraft anywhere in the world. This allows the US to hypothetically strike targets and make its influence felt the world over.
WNU Editor: A few weeks ago I asked my cousin's son who is serving in the Russian navy on what type of ship does he want to be deployed in .... and his answer was an aircraft carrier?!?!?!?! Now if it was up to me .... I would want to be deployed on the smallest ship possible .... it would just make me a lesser target .... but that's me. But seriously .... these Russian plans to build an aircraft carrier are just fantasies .... the cost involved in building the ship, support ships, the planes, the continuous training, support facilities in other countries .... it is not going to happen .... especially in today's era of budget cuts and austerity.
