Sure, in theory it would be nice to tell loved ones the truth, but there are plenty of times when it’s probably a bad idea. Or maybe the truth doesn’t live up to loved ones’ expectations. Either way, here are 9 lies that usually do the trick:
WNU editor: Someone should compile a list for diplomats who serve abroad. My best one is when I told my GF before being sent to China that I will be back before you know it. Cough .... cough .... two years later I came back. :)

Perhaps you could compile that list as you served as a diplomat.:-) I would not know much about this topic.
While I did not serve in the military as my eyesight is poor, many family and friends did and based upon what I know from this, the list you link to is quite accurate!!
