Reuters: China accelerating land reclamation in disputed Spratlys: Pentagon

China embarked upon extensive land reclamation efforts at five outposts in the disputed Spratly Islands last year, adding 500 acres of territory as of December, the Pentagon said in a report on Friday.

A senior defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Chinese land reclamation efforts have continued to accelerate since then, adding another 1,500 acres to the outposts in the South China Sea. The island chain is claimed by at least three other countries, including the Philippines, Taiwan and Malaysia.

Details on the land reclamation drive were included in the department's annual report to Congress on military and security issues related to China.
