RT: 70 for Victory: Armata tanks, nuclear bombers, intl boots in Moscow for V-Day
On Saturday Russia is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the victory in World War II. The biggest part is the military parade in Moscow’s Red Square, a grand event involving newest hardware at the army’s disposal.
The parade opened with solemn carrying of two flags, that of Russia and the historic banner that was raised over the Reichstag building back in 1945 to declare that it was taken by the Red Army.
Troops from all arms of the service were lined up on Red Square. Those include young cadets from Suvorov military school and visiting foreign troops from 10 countries. Inspecting the ranks, Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu reported to President Vladimir Putin, who is Commander-in-Chief of the Russian armed forces, that the troops are ready for the parade to start.
Update: The daily Mail has some great photos on today's Victory Day parade. The link is here.
WNU Editor: Years ago I asked my dad on where was he on the last day of the war. He was about 40 km west of Berlin .... his military unit of about 500 men had been battling German forces nonstop for 3 days and were down to about 160 soldiers. He personally was almost picked off by a German sniper in the early morning hours .... and on that day he felt that unless they were relieved by Soviet soldiers soon .... his chances of survival were grim. Late in the day he received word that the war was over .... but even though the war was over .... he told me that the area was still incredibly dangerous, and that the the only time that he finally felt safe was when he went he teamed out with a Soviet division that was rushing to the new East-West border .... for him .... that was when he felt the war was finally over. Unfortunately .... and speaking as his son .... the war may have officially ended on that day .... but he battled his demons for the rest of his life on what he did in that war .... that in the certain way .... the war really never ended.
