Bloomberg: Russia Rejects Automatic Sanctions Return If Iran Cheats on Deal

The Obama administration is trying to sell a nuclear deal with Iran to skeptical Arabs, Israelis and U.S. lawmakers by saying that United Nations sanctions will be restored automatically if the Iranians are caught cheating.

Not so, say the Russians, who have one of five vetoes in the 15-member UN Security Council.

“There can be no automaticity, none whatsoever” in reimposing UN sanctions if Iran violates the terms of an agreement to curb its nuclear program, Russia’s UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told Bloomberg News on Wednesday. He didn’t elaborate.

WNU Editor: This destroys the White House position that sanctions will be imposed if Iran is caught breaking its nuclear agreement.

I'd almost forgot about Vitaly, I guess he's completely given up on his movie career.

He actually has a great job James. For those who work in the FO and want the good life .... New York City or London is the place to be. Restaurants, shows, no parking tickets, and all under a diplomatic umbrella. But for those who want to make contacts and money .... China is the place to be.

WNU Editor,

Nope, it requires that :

The UNSC is the "group" that decides if Iran is breaking the agreement, not a single member,

And that the UNSC is the "group" that decides if Sanctions are to be imposed, and what they will be.

It's an assurance that the "Real Men go to Tehran" crowd in State, or the next White House, or AIPAC, can't blow up 5 years of diplomacy and negotiations on a whim to attack Iran.
