Wall Street Journal: Navy Awards $4.3 Billion in Aircraft Carrier Deals

Huntington Ingalls secures two deals related to nuclear-powered carriers

The Pentagon on Friday awarded contracts valued at $4.3 billion to Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc. to continue work on the Navy’s second Ford-class aircraft carrier following two years of wrangling over cost overruns on the first vessel.

Huntington Ingalls is the Navy’s only builder of nuclear-powered carriers, with work under way on the first two of an anticipated four-ship fleet that is expected to be in service for 50 years.

The company secured a $3.35 billion deal for design and construction work on the future USS John F. Kennedy and a $955 million award for components and materials. It had already started construction on the ship under a series of smaller contracts.
