Voice of America: Carter Makes Unannounced Visit to Iraq
U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter made an unannounced visit to Iraq, which is fighting Islamic State militants with the help of U.S.-led airstrikes and training.
Carter landed early Thursday in Baghdad, where he will meet with top Iraqi officials including Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and Defense Minister Khaled al-Obeidi.
Carter will also meet with Sunni leaders that the U.S. is trying to recruit in the battle against the Islamic State group, which controls parts of northern and western Iraq.
Iraq is expected to soon begin a major counteroffensive to take back the city of Ramadi, in Anbar province, in what is seen as a key test for the country's military.
WNU Editor: I am not surprised that he went to Iraq .... he was in the neighborhood and the next stage in the war against the Islamic State is about to unfold. Unfortunately .... I do not see the U.S. playing a major role in the battle for Ramadi. U.S. and coalition air strikes are limited, and U.S. forces are going to be playing a limited if any role on the front lines.

The visits have to be surprises because security is not good.
Tells you everything you need to know.
Obama squandered the surge.
