Afghan Military Helicopter Crash Kills 17

New York Times: Afghan Army Helicopter Crashes, Killing All 17 Aboard

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — An Afghan National Army helicopter crashed in southern Afghanistan on Thursday, killing all 17 people aboard, government officials said.

The crash in Zabul Province killed five crew members on the Russian-made helicopter along with 12 soldiers being transported to a new post, the officials said.

Gen. Dawlat Waziri, the spokesman for the Afghan Ministry of Defense, and Guli Islam Seyal, a spokesman for the governor of Zabul, blamed technical problems for the crash. But the Taliban spokesman for southern Afghanistan, Qari Yousef Ahmadi, said in a message posted on his Twitter account that insurgents had shot down the helicopter over Naw Bahar district.

Assadullah Kakar, a member of the Zabul provincial council, said there was no insurgent activity in the area of the crash.
