Reuters: Ukraine faces risky year fighting to escape Russian orbit: Poroshenko
President Petro Poroshenko said on Monday Ukraine was facing a precarious year struggling to fend off what he called Russian strategies to undermine Kiev's drive for closer relations with Europe.
He spoke at a ceremony in central Kiev to mark 24 years of Ukrainian independence from Moscow, its Soviet-era ruler, before traveling to Berlin for talks with the leaders of France and Germany on the implementation of a much-violated ceasefire deal with pro-Russian rebels holding parts of eastern Ukraine.
"We have to get through the (coming) 25th year of independence as if on brittle ice. We must understand that the smallest misstep could be fatal. The war for Ukrainian independence is continuing," he said, addressing a crowd of several thousand.
WNU Editor: Ukraine is facing a political/economic/debt/social crisis that is just as important (and dire) as the conflict in eastern Ukraine Unfortunately .... Ukrainian President Poroshenko is primarily focusing on the war. My prediction .... his poll numbers are in the 20s right now .... and if things do not improve by the middle of winter I expect a return of mass demonstrations and protests to central Kiev. On a personal note .... everyone I know in Ukraine is suffering right now ... they are fed-up with Russia, the war, and Kiev .... and they want this to end .... myself included.

WNU Editor,
CounterPunch has an article up suggesting that the Ukies are staged for a two prong offensive towards, yet again, Illosovak, to once again try to split and isolate the DPR and LPR.
An early fall offensive perhaps in the hopes that winter will prevent the creation and collapse of cauldrons?
theyve no chance against naf forces they simply get out done in combat all there good at is shelling theyve lost every major battle since war started and countless small battles despite them having more armour there inferior fighters as for offensive carbon copy almost of first attacks double ring ha its multiple prong offensive from mariupol ,donestk airport, gorlovka,at top luhansk 90,000 troops, thousands pieces of armour its gona be blood bath im afraid i feel sorry for all who will perish in such senseless war caused by coup
Disagree, you have to remember the rebels had twice the territory that they have now. The only reason they have what they have is because the Russians intervened on their behalf. The Ukrainians are doing quite well and in the last two major actions in Maravinka and Starohnativka the Ukrainians beat the rebels badly. It's my belief the Russians have gone as far as they can, Maripul would be a blood bath for them and the Russians know it. Stalemate at the moment, neither side can take the other without heavy casualties, IMO.
Steven,
All of the DPR and LPR territorial losses, occured before and during their transition from Maiden like protestors, to an armed Militia.
Once they had become an armed Militia, they took back territory.
Now, they are mostly Russian pattern Armoured Brigaides, not the medium Infantry of last fall.
I agree Jay. Militias they are not any-more.
Jay, the the rebels were on the ropes and about to lose, the Ukraine pushed them out of most of Donbas before the Russians got militarily involved on the ground. The Russians counter-attacked and got some territory back but not most. The rebels already had Donetesk, Horlivka and Luhansk and have not been able to take any major city since, unless you count Debaltseve as major. It took them 8 months to get the Ukrainians out of the airport and most reports treachery was used in Illoviask again after it took them weeks to get them out.
Steven,
The Vorentag is limited. The DPR and LPR get just enough aid, to not fail, and not enough aid, to win, otherwise, Kiev would have fallen in the fall.
