Voice of America: Number of Afghans Seeking to Leave Their Country Rises
ISLAMABAD - The number of Afghans who want to flee their country, citing worsening economic and security conditions, has soared, despite pleas by their leaders to stay and rebuild their nation.
Afghan officials say the number of applications for new passports has increased dramatically in recent months, and they are ill-equipped to deal with the pressure.
Residents in Kabul witness hundreds of men and women arriving early each morning to line up outside the city’s only passport office.
WNU Editor: A friend of mine who works for a Canadian NGO in Afghanistan told me only last week that the perception in Afghanistan is that Europe is now unconditionally accepting Afghans as refugees. Naturally ... this coupled with a horrible security/economic situation is forcing many to now make plans to leave .... and yes .... Europe is the destination of choice. My friend also told me that if given a chance and with enough resources .... a third of he population would leave immediately.
