EU Migration Crisis News Updates -- September 17, 2015

Daily Mail: Now Croatian riot police are sent to deal with migrants after 9,000 arrive in the country, as Hungary faces condemnation for using tear gas to disperse crowds at its border

* Croatia is the new route of choice for western Europe-bound refugees after Hungary sealed its Serbian border
* Some 5,650 refugees have entered the EU member state via its eastern border with Serbia over the past 24 hours
* Interior minister has warned Croatia will close the border if another 8,000 people arrive in just one day
* Yesterday heavy-handed Hungarian riot police fired tear gas and water cannons at migrants sparking global outrage
* Border guards detained 29 people during the clashes, including a man identified by officials as a known 'terrorist'
* Hungarian PM praised the guards for defending 'Europe's Christian culture' by blocking the mainly Muslim refugees

Helmeted riot police tried to control growing crowds of refugees at the Croatian border town of Tovarnik this morning, as thousands of migrants jostled to board buses after crossing into the country from neighbouring Serbia.

About 9,000 new arrivals have entered the EU member state in just two days via its eastern border - the route of choice for those hoping to reach western Europe after Hungary sealed its southern frontier with Serbia.

But the country has not yet sealed its border with Croatia, and migrants have now converged near the Hungarian village of Illocska, opposite the Croatian town of Beli Manastir, hoping to cross into the passport-free Schengen zone.

Close to 1,000 migrants arrived on a single train in the town this evening, where 20 police officers were on hand to encourage them to spend the night in a disused military base.
