Europe's Migrant Crisis -- News Updates September 8, 2015

Daily Mail: Collapsing from exhaustion, clashing with police and too scared to go to the toilet in case they miss their chance to leave: Ordeal of the 20,000 migrants trapped on Lesbos

* Refugees have been stranded on Greek island for weeks, running out of money and desperate to reach the mainland
* Authorities have become overwhelmed by influx of 20,000 migrants – around a fifth of the island's entire population
* Fights break out as refugees wait in long lines for hours to register in the summer heat after days without showers
* Locals complain about bottles, plastic bags and cardboard thrown into the sea and across streets around the port

It was supposed to be the first step on their journey to Western Europe. But now thousands of migrants are mired in despair, anger and frustration on the scenic Greek island of Lesbos.

After perilous sea voyages from neighbouring Turkey, they have been stranded here for days, some for nearly two weeks, running out of money and desperate to get to mainland Greece and continue their route.

The island of some 100,000 residents has been transformed by the sudden new population of some 20,000 refugees, mostly from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan – and the strain is pushing everyone to the limit.
