Huge Protests In Moldova Over Massive Bank Fraud

Deutsche Welle: Anger over 'fraud of the century' in Moldova

Protesters have pitched around 100 tents in the capital Chisinau, demanding the resignation of the president and snap elections. The scandal over $1 billion missing from state banks has sparked a political crisis.

Protesters who camped overnight in Chisinau vowed Monday to press the round-the-clock action against what they see as widespread corruption and force the resignation of the country's leadership.

The protests in Europe's poorest country of 3.5 million people were triggered by an unprecedented scam that saw $1 billion (900 million euros) -- roughly 10 percent of Moldova's GDP -- was stolen from a trio of banks.

"We have a duty to take back our country which the oligarchs and bandits have seized from us," Elena Cebanu, a 26-year-old nurse who spent the night in the tent city, told the AFP news agency.

How exactly is Russia going to "put sis paw" over Moldova? To do so would mean taking responsibility for the money that was stolen. IF someone had the funds to make good on the funds that were stolen, someone could stand by with low interest loans to the people the funds were stolen from to be paid back when the people are able to. In other words, no rush on paying it back.

In exchange for this, this someone could hand pick a successor government and Moldova would be subservient to them. This someone would now have another country under their control, they would be able to get the lions share of the country's resources for their control, and they would be a hero to the people for restoring the funds that were stolen. Also, they'd have to prosecute those who stole the money which will likely be a challenge in and of itself.

Does Vladimir Putin want to do this and is he able to do this? Russia is probably in the best position of any country to do something like this but with the other issues they have I'm not so sure they want the problems Moldova has right now to add to their own.
