Jennifer Rubin, Washington Post: Sustaining a veto is not ‘winning approval’ on Iran deal
Disingenuous members of the media and other defenders of the president will say with liberal Sen. Barbara Mikulski’s (D-Md.) decision to support the Iran deal that the president has “won approval” for the deal. Nothing could be further from the truth.
In an appearance on Fox News, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) had it right: Getting votes to sustain a veto is not winning. A large majority in Congress will reject the deal. The president will nevertheless go forward, despite that vote and despite the 2-to-1 majority in the country that disapproves of the deal, to exercise his executive veto under current sanctions laws. That is not binding on subsequent presidents.
WNU Editor: Jennifer Rubin is correct. Getting only one third of the votes to support your deal is not "winning approval" for the deal. Unfortunately .... the media spin (even from the wire services) tries to paint a different picture .... Obama secures key vote to protect Iran nuclear deal in U.S. Congress (Reuters). And then there are those in the media who are even blatantly partisan .... More Self-Inflicted Wounds (Michael Getler, PBS Ombudsman).
