Bloomberg: Turkish Conflict Escalates as Erdogan Responds to Militants
Turkey was gripped by a dramatic escalation of violence as security forces responded to the killing of 30 soldiers and policemen by Kurdish separatists with airstrikes and the deployment of special forces.
Militants from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, killed 13 policemen in a roadside bomb attack on Tuesday in the Igdir province bordering Iran and Armenia, according to both pro-government and pro-Kurdish news agencies. Another policeman was shot dead in the eastern province of Tunceli. The attacks followed the killing of 16 soldiers on Sunday near the border with Iraq.
“If the government can’t exert control, spiraling violence could increase the risk of a civil war,” said Nihat Ali Ozcan, who studies the group at the Economic Policy Research Foundation in Ankara. “The PKK is increasingly shifting attacks to urban areas and targeting policemen to inflict greater damage on security forces.”
