* Pope Francis arrived at the White House Wednesday morning to give his opening remarks to America in front of a crowd of 20,000
* Among those who gathered for the speech were several prominent DC Catholics including Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State John Kerry and Kennedy family matriarch Ethel Kennedy
* Following the speech, the pontiff went inside for a private meeting with President Barack Obama
* After the meeting, the pope is scheduled to ride from the White House in his pope-mobile to the Cathedral of St Matthew the Apostle, where midday prayers will be held
* Later in the day, he will canonize a new saint in a special mass at Catholic University
* President Obama broke protocol to greet the head of the Catholic Church at the airport when the pope landed at Andrews Air Force Base on Tuesday
* Pope Francis, 78, will also be the first pontiff to address Congress in an historic speech scheduled for Thursday
* Washington, DC is the first stop on the pope's six-day, three-city tour of America. After DC, the pope will head to New York City and Philadelphia
Pope Francis called upon American Catholics to take up climate change and encourage world peace through diplomacy in his first speech in the U.S. at the White House Wednesday morning.
Twenty thousand flooded the White House South Lawn to hear the pope speak, in addition to tens of thousands more who stood in line overnight to grab a spot along the pope's parade route in Washington, DC.
The pontiff's speech was the first official event in his six-day, three-city tour of the U.S.
