It's funny,
you look at the Russians and see tents, field kitchens, straight brown uniforms for the theatre, no big time frills. An army in the field getting down to business.
During my time overseas I always thought that our armies where, well, too fancy. All kinds of different camo patterns, even within the same national forces, a bunch of junk food, a lot of stores/restaurants, comfort (except on the FOBs).
Even the Russian kit in terms of the aircraft, tanks etc. while modern, still has that utilitarian look about it. I've always had a weakness for Soviet/Russian military gear and wouldn't think twice about (as I mentioned before) procuring some for Canada if it were my decision to make. The stuff just looks rugged and ready for a fight with minimal coddling necessary.
It's something to see a national culture represented in its military. Canada could learn a lot and gain from closer cooperation with Russia, especially as a small country with limited resources to throw at her armed forces. I think a lot of Canadians forget that they are our neighbours too and, at one time, our allies.
My WW2 vet Grandfather had nothing but good things to say about the USSR/Russia and taught us to respect and seek friendship with them. "They sure as hell know how to fight. And I sure as hell don't want to fight them." is what he said.
Part three. First photo. Trooper operating the fuel truck is wearing sandals. That's a capital offence on Western flightlines.
