Fiscal Times: Are Cuban Troops Backing Up Putin and Assad in Syria?

The armed conflict in Syria has become more complex in recent weeks, with Russia launching waves of air strikes against rebel forces, some backed by the U.S. Various rebel groups have fought government forces and each other, as the Turkish military watches nervously on the northern border. And now there may be a new player on the battlefield: Cuba.

Earlier this week, Fox News reported that Cuban military personnel are in Syria to advise the government’s soldiers and assist Russian forces.

The report cites information received by the University of Miami's Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies that shows the chief of Cuba’s Armed Forces recently visited Syria with the idea of striking a military alliance, a claim backed by an unnamed U.S. official.

The report set off alarm bells throughout the conservative media, with additional reports claiming, among other things, that Havana has thousands of soldiers in Syria serving in tank crews.

The White House flatly rejected the notion that the Cuban military is in Syria.

WNU Editor: The White House has denied these reports, and so has the Cuban government .... Cuba denies it has sent troops to Syria to help Assad (Reuters). What's my take .... too early to tell if the reports are true, but reports continue to persist that there are 2,000 Cuban soldiers in Syria .... 2,000 Cuban soldiers are in Syria to drive Russian T-90 tanks for fighting Isis, say reports (IBTimes)

That is a lot of soldiers and a lot of tanks.

I have trouble believing both.

Though I would never doubt the Cuban will to fight abroad alongside Russia.

WNU Editor,

Cuba has no T-90 tanks nor have any Cubans been trained on the T-90.

There is no evidence that Russia has deployed T-90 tanks to Syria.

The so called "expert" is pulling a Red Scare.

Yes, and may I respectfully submit, the the Cubans are known round the world for their provision of health care to those in need. I seem to recall they even offered it to the US during the Hurricane Katrina disaster.

"What! Commie Devils! We dont need your EVIL health care!!!"

I read that the Soviets were, in fact, less than happy about Castro's Angolan intervention. It was a case of the so called tail wagging the dog.

I love veterans. Wherever i go, if i see them i try to get have a convesation with them. Some of the most interesting vets i've ever met were those in Cardenas, a predominately black Cuban community.

Talk about hard core. They are super proud of their time in Angola. One particular bad ass told me he flew a Mig 23. He said he kept an AKM with him in the cockpit, that way if he were shot down he could keep "chasing" the South Africans. No joke.

If Cubanos are operating T anythings in Syria, look the @@@@ out.

Take it from one who knows RRH .... do not get sick in Cuba. And if you do .... fly out ASAP. The Cuban health care system is good for only one thing ... flying their doctors to other places, and hoping that those countries have the necessary medical supplies and equipment in place to give these doctors.

That's one of the things I can't stand about Cuba; it seems doctors, and soldiers, are the only ones allowed to fly out. It's one the reasons I don't visit anymore. If people want to leave they should be free to go. If it empties out the country, well too bad, revolutions have their cost.
