U.S. And Russia To Discuss Search And Rescue Operations In Case A Pilot Is Downed In Syria

Sputnik: US, Russia Ready to Discuss Search and Rescue in Case Pilot Downed in Syria

US, Russia ready to discuss search and rescue in Syria in case of downed pilot or aircraft in distress through the newly established channel, Pentagon said.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States and Russia are prepared to cooperate on search and rescue of pilots in Syria, US Department of Defense spokesperson Lt. Col. Michelle Baldanza told Sputnik on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, Washington and Moscow signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the flight safety during their air operations in Syria.

“We have not developed a new agreement with Russia regarding Search and Rescue. In the case of a downed pilot or aircraft in distress, both sides should contact each other via the newly established channel. Further action will be determined at the time of incident,” Baldanza explained, adding that no agreement has been developed on the issue.

WNU Editor: Will they actually work together to save each others pilots in the event that one is shot down .... I guess we will have to wait and see .... but my gut is telling me no.

Update: Former pilot takes shots at Russia, U.S. agreement on Syria (Washington Examiner).

I think they will. The US has been pulled dragging and screaming into an agreement to basically save the lives of airmen. To not perform as committed would be a political and tactical error beyond belief.
