U.S. Experts: Russia Is Sending Messages With Its Cruise Missile Strike On Syria

Defense News: Experts: Russian navy missile strikes were 'bravado

Russia's move Wednesday to hit Syrian targets from more than 1,000 miles away using ship-based, long-range cruise missiles from the Caspian Sea was a dramatic display of military power designed to taunt the U.S., experts say.

"This was specifically done to show bravado ... it's chest thumping," said Christopher Harmer, a retired Navy officer and senior naval analyst at the Institute for the Study of War in Washington.

The Russians announced 26 missile strikes on Syrian rebels using a first-of-its-kind act of power projection, firing ship-based supersonic "Klub" missiles, roughly similar to American-made Tomahawk missiles and sometimes referred to as "carrier killers."

WNU Editor: There were a lot of messages that were sent in this strike .... off the top of my head .... (1) Russia can launch cruise missile strikes, (2) Russia is prepared to escalate the conflict, (3) Iran and Iraq are cooperating with Russia, and (4) Russia is targeting all rebel groups in Syria.

The Russians are succeeding in the propaganda war. But militarily they've accomplished nothing....is a continued stalemate winning?

I'll know the Russians are serious when they deploy Tupolev Tu-95 or Tu-160.

And 50,000 soldiers minimum....I wish them luck.

James

You don't think they gave the Iranians a heads up?

SAA forces have over the past 3 days, with the help of Russian Marines and Spetnaz, have cleared all the jihadist pockets from Latakia all the way to the I5.

That's territory the Syrian Government lost 3 years ago and has never been able to retake.

Phill,
Yes I do think it was also a message to the Iranians, somewhere along the lines of "yes we're here working with you in Syria, but no funny business, this is what we have just north of Tehran, so mind what we say". It was also something for the Gulf emirates to consider, especially Kuwait (hint: you ARE in range).
I think the Russians are going to let the Iranis and Hezbollah do the heavy ground work.

phill,

They don't need 50,000 soldiers.

2/3rds of the Syrian Government forces are engaged in blocking/seige actions around the dozens of jihadist pockets scattered through out Government "controlled" Syria.

Clearing those pockets frees up over 75,000 experienced SAA soldiers.

It was also a loud message to Turkey.

"It was also a loud message to Turkey." Yes. Probably it was intended for everyone within range to take notice.

Launching from the Caspain Sea wouldn't be much of a "message" to Iran and Iraq, as the Russian Airpower currently in Syria transited this route, with the full knoledge and cooperation of the Iraqi and Iranian Governments.

It would however, be a very loud message to Egodan that the response to any Turkish games against Russian Forces in Syria, would not nessicarily come from Syrian territory.

Well, I'm out of range and I got the message.

I wonder if Harper did.......?

All this going on and not one loud call to get Canadian forces out of the region during this ridiculous election campaign.

Well, back to reality....

Turkey better get the message too. In fact, the whole GCC/NATO "coalition" has been put on notice.

And what of China?

As far as messages, it's hard to say. I think pretty much most of the posts here raise valid and interesting points.

This does not surprise me in the least. As I've been patiently pointing out here and elsewhere many, many times over a very long time, the Russian military is the world's best and most capable. Other nations in the region in world had best take note of this and act accordingly.

According to some commentators at Fox News the messages are Russia is saying "we are back" and we are a "superpower," I'm pleased they are finally catching on to what I've known for quite some time.

In the thread, the Russian government was referred to as a "mafi regime" by Miguel LM. Maybe this is true. Maybe it isn't. What is vitally important is that we gain a better understanding of Russia and Mr. Putin.

Like it or not this is the most powerful nation and the most powerful leader in the world. <r. Putin and Russia are on the cusp of having more power in relative and absolute terms than any other country or nation has ever had in world history, if this has not been achieved already. At this point, it may not be clear what he actually plans to do with this power. What type of government this is will affect how we deal with and how best to go about reaching an accommodation with them.

They know hey have us by the short and curlies. We're broke, semi literate, corrupt, devoid of intellectual and moral credibility. I saw it coming to B. Everyone just laughed when I said old Mother Russia is coming back online.

Believe me, I want that accommodation.
