CNN: U.S. officials say Russian missiles heading for Syria landed in Iran
Washington (CNN)A number of cruise missiles launched from a Russian ship and aimed at targets in Syria have crashed in Iran, two U.S. officials told CNN Thursday.
Monitoring by U.S. military and intelligence assets has concluded that at least four missiles crashed as they flew over Iran. One official said there may be casualties, but another official said this is not yet known.
It's unclear where in Iran the missiles landed. The Russian ships have been positioned in the south Caspian Sea, meaning the likely flight path for missiles into Syria would cross over both Iran and Iraq.
The Russians have been firing a relatively new cruise missile called "Kaliber," using it for the first time in combat.
Iran's semi-official FARS news agency, however, said that neither Russian nor Iranian authorities have confirmed the U.S. officials' information at this point.

B Poster must be in shock , that the "greatest" military of our lifetime....cant land its cruise missiles in the right country .
Travis,
You have to learn to parse the propaganda.
Down thread there is a "news release" claiming that US Intel was blindsided by the launch, then this story claiming they tracked the missiles an 4 fell down.
Then in this story, they call the non-Export version of the Klub missile. ( a missile older than the Harpoon" a new missile, and give it a new name that nobody uses.
And of course, no mention of the Tomahawks that during Operation Shock and Awe, missed their targets by over 1500 miles, and exploded in Turkey and Iran.
"Then in this story, they call the non-Export version of the Klub missile. ( a missile older than the Harpoon" a new missile, and give it a new name that nobody uses."
Still more accurate than the BBC, who called them 'rockets' :)
You gave me my laugh today Caucus. :)
Actually Travis I'm not shocked at all. Military operations are VERY, VERY tough and things like this can and do happen. If you had practical military experience or spent significant time with those who do and you spent the proper time to study such things, you would understand such things.
Much time and space could be spent discussing similar accidents on the part of the American military. Suffice it to say military work is very complex and very dangerous and such things should be expected to happen and should not come as a surprise to anyone.
With that said the Russian information campaign is very clever. It's hard to know just how successful they have been to date. Personally I would not have a problem with bitter enemies tearing one another apart.
I don't think that's going to happen. To pan on such a thing happening is a bit like someone planning their entire financial future on winning the lottery. To say the least it would be unwise. I'd expect Russia and its allies to dispose of non ISIS opposition in short order and within a few months to dispose of ISIS. This is the scenario US and "Western" leaders need to plan for.
Where is the proof for either claim?
Just to add to the discussion....I don't watch cnn.
"rockets", "klubs" whatever. The real story is those impudent Russians implementing their spin on the "war on terror" and "the right to protect" doctrines.
Exposing "Coalition" contradictions and lies in front of the whole world is doing almost as much or more than the aforementioned weapons; regardless of their landing sites.

With you on this B Poster.
I recall having a smoke in a bunker with a certain camo clad team member during a pretty nasty Wahhibi gift of incoming (the kind that just keeps on giving). I asked him about the very storied counter battery radar and if pretty soon a whole lot of Wahhibis would be going kapow! Splat! And similar. He said " Oh yeah. That. It doesn't work, eh."
Needless to say the job still gets done. Some(a lot of)times its not as glamourous as the Super Duper Precision Guided Glosnass Freedom Fries Death Ray (SDPGGFFDR for my American friends) but no less virgin begetting than say the Mossberg 12 gauge pumps I saw more than one camoed member taking out on patrol to apply the ol' Hama Rules with.
Like Red Green used to say "Ya don't have to be handsome... Just handy.
Seems to me the Russians are all about handsomely handling Wahibbis right now.
RRH,
Thanks for including me on this. at least I think. Russia is the most powerful military force on earth. American and "western" leaders need to grasp this and act accordingly.
Now as to how successful the Russians are in Syria, time will tell. The Russians are the best the best in world at messaging so the reality is hard to really know at this point. The Americans are the world's worst at messaging.
With that said it seems to me Russia is the most powerful country on earth right now and the only reason sanctions are allowed to continue is because Vladimir Putin likes them as they only strengthen him and the resolve of the Russian people. I'd suggest America immediately act to do all it can to end economic sanctions against Russia and act forcefully to oppose EU efforts to sanction Russia.
Had I been POTUS, I'd have tried to enter the coalition against Assad's enemies as a junior partner. I'd have acted in this manner LONG, LONG ago, Since our leaders have been exceedingly stupid, this makes things very, very difficult now.
Russia is likely to succeed in Syria. This means Iran "death to American" will be left standing with no opposition.
How does America proceed with this reality? Much of this depends upon Russia's intentions as the world's top power. Personally I think their intentions given the prior history between our prior countries their intentions are consistent wi5h those of Iran "death to America."
With the most powerful country on earth wanting our death this is NOT good. We should be looking at ways to change this and we should also be working 0n ways to defend our nation to the point that they might conclude it to costly to attack us. As such, we should be redeploying our forces to defensible positions off our coasts and along our borders and upgrading the nuclear arsenal.
As for our relations with Russian, perhaps if US leaders were to approach Russian leaders with a proposal to enter the Syrian war as a junior partner to Russia this might help our relations with Russia IF their is something we can do to help, this would likely go a long way towards repairing relations with them. Improving relations with Russia would likely help our relations with their Iranian puppet regime as well.
