Will A New Canadian Government Affect U.S. National Security?

Paul D. Shinkman, US News and World Report: How Canada's Election Affects U.S. National Security

Another Western nation has voted for hope and change. But is Justin Trudeau ready to lead?

Canada's newly elected prime minister appears poised to re-examine the country's role in international affairs, ushering in a shift in policies that could conflict with what the U.S. has grown to expect from its partner in the war against Islamic extremism.

The young, idealistic and largely untested Justin Trudeau successfully rallied public support against Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper and his government, which over 10 years in power expanded its fight against extremism abroad and at home. Canadians had begun to question policies that were designed to give the government greater powers to root extremists out of its Muslim citizenry and which frequently over the last decade placed the country in lockstep with the war footing of its southern neighbor.

WNU Editor: On certain issues there will be an impact. In one of his first announcements after winning the election, Justin Trudeau has already indicated that Canada will withdraw from the U.S. coalition in the war against the Islamic State and will focus on providing humanitarian assistance. On modernizing the Canadian military .... I expect the F-35 purchase will be scrapped for a cheaper plane, and all other programs will be put under review. I do expect a Trudeau government to continue providing assistance to Ukraine, and a supportive role in NATO. In regards to Russia .... no change in current policies.

If so, he's foolish and we will suffer for it.

Even Stockell Day (not known in these parts for a grand intellect) had enough sense to say of history that "when the tide goes out you go with it".
