Ed Feulner, Daily Signal: America’s Military Can’t Run on Wishful Thinking
It seems fitting that the Heritage Foundation released its latest Index of U.S. Military Strength just before Halloween. It makes for some scary reading.
It’s easy to assume that our military will always be prepared to not only defend our shores, but protect our allies and interests worldwide. Indeed, to suggest otherwise might seem unnecessarily pessimistic.
But wishful thinking doesn’t keep you safe—doing the hard work to remain prepared does. You can’t do that if you don’t examine our actual state of readiness, and that’s what the editors of the 2016 edition of the index have done.
WNU Editor: If the Pentagon is running on "wishful thinking" .... what is the White House and Congress running on? I shudder when I think about that.

The real test will come, perhaps a long time from now, when the US has to defend itself against an invasion. The American military has yet to prove itself on home land as the Russians did in WWll against the Germans.

Possible answer from experience in D.C.: ego, self interest, D.C. echo chamber, future jobs outside government, etc.
Recent report noted that the people entering the security services and military are from low quality schools at which these people, with eventual high level security clearances, learn very little about the parts of the world they will work on at their jobs. They turn out technicians and managers. These people do not understand other cultures and historical complexity. They wind up, eventually, providing bad advice to political appointees and become cheerleaders for the party in power. Critical thinking not required or welcome.
