AFP: NATO calls 'extraordinary meeting' after Turkey downs Russian jet

Brussels (AFP) - NATO allies will hold an "extraordinary" meeting Tuesday at Ankara's request to discuss Turkey's shooting down of a Russian fighter jet along the Syrian border, an alliance official said.

"At the request of Turkey, the North Atlantic Council will hold an extraordinary meeting at (1600 GMT). The aim of this extraordinary NAC is for Turkey to inform Allies about the downing of a Russian airplane," the official told AFP.

WNU Editor: I suspect that what concerns many NATO members in today's meeting is that Turkey will be invoking the "Collective Defense Clause" .... which they are openly hinting that they will do .... Russian Su-24 Plane Update: Will Turkey Invoke NATO's Collective Defense Clause? (IBTimes). I suspect that there is a lot of lobbying occurring right now for Turkey to not do that. The last thing that the main members of NATO want to find themselves in is to be in a position that it must respond militarily to today's events .... doubly so on the side of Turkey who has not been a good ally when it comes to funnelling refugees to Europe, turning a blind eye to the Islamic State and Al Qaeda in Syria, and to launching major military strikes against Kurdish forces fighting the Islamic State.

I have feeling Turkey is about to be thrown under the bus, most of NATO realize that if Russia retaliates the Turks could invoke article 5, and that scares the poo out of them. Most of NATO is not interested in a war with Russia, they know it would be a total disaster for all involved.

I wouldn't have thought Turkey to be capable of downing a Russian military jet. If Turkey does try to invoke the mutual defense clause, it should be very easy for other members of NATO to calmly explain how Turkey has been unreliable and, as such, Turkey is on its own on this one.

They are the ones who chose to shoot down a jet of the most powerful military force on earth. It is they who must deal with the consequences of that action. As has been said, "you made your bed now you have to lie in it." This applies to Turkey.

Not only would war with Russia be a total disaster but such a war is one that would very likely be unwinnable for the United States and its "allies." Speaking of the article 5 I've never liked NATO much as I see potential for the United States to get drawn into conflicts that are against its interests in the support of "allies" who are best users of America, at the very least unreliable, and at worst downright enemies of America. If I were POTUS or other US leadership, I'd be working on getting us out of NATO forthwith.

The Sultan is a nutjob. If there were any brains in Ottawa, Canada would withdraw from NATO before the day is out.
