Nigeria’s government has accused the country’s former National Security Adviser of misappropriating billions of dollars by awarding fictitious arms contracts.

The investigation, part of a wider probe of corruption in the armed forces, underlines the challenges posed by Nigeria’s ongoing governance problems in its fight against the Islamist insurgent group Boko Haram, as a new report shows that deaths from terrorism in the country increased by more than 300% over the past year.

Boko Haram has cost Nigeria an estimated $1 billion in destroyed infrastructure and billions in lost foreign direct investment.
