Russian Deploys Anti-Aircraft Missile Systems To Syria

RT: Russian air defense deployed to Syria along with warplanes – commander

Russia’s Air Force has secured Syrian airspace with air defense missile systems that were delivered and deployed into the war-torn country along with other military hardware, its chief has revealed in an interview.

“We figured out all possible threats in advance, that’s why we brought not only fighter jets, strike-fighters and helicopters, but also air defense missile weapon systems,” Viktor Bondarev, the chief of Russia’s Air Force, told Komsomolskaya Pravda daily, adding that all kinds of force majeure circumstances should be expected.

“Let’s say a warplane is hijacked in a country neighboring Syria, to be used to make an airstrike on (Russia’s Khmeimim airbase near Latakia). Even that is something we must be ready for,” Bondarev said, adding that so far no attacks on the base have been registered and no Russian servicemen have been injured.

WNU Editor: Since the Islamic State does not have jet fighters, one can only assume that these missile systems will be targeting Israeli, Turkish, and U.S.-coalition jet fighters and bombers. On a side note .... apparently a SAM-lock was the reason for a Russian jet incursion into Turkey two weeks ago .... Russian jet was 'avoiding SAM system' when it flew into Turkish airspace (IHS Jane's 360). Turkey is sceptical of this Russian explanation .... Turkey denies Russian commander’s claims over violation of Turkish airspace (Daily Hurriyet News)

RRH .... if I was being locked on by a SAM missile .... the last thing that would be on my mind is "where is the border".

Some of the guys who flew on Haiphong harbor runs told me that the sam alarms in the their cockpits went off so often, they in the end just turned them off so they could concentrate. Some of the "Wild Weasels" told me some pretty good stories of dancing with the sams.
