Wall Street Journal: China, Taiwan Presidents Poised for Historic Meeting
Summit would mark first meeting of China and Taiwan leaders since 1949 split
BEIJING—The leaders of China and Taiwan will meet on Saturday for the first time since the governments split in 1949 after the Communist takeover on the mainland, Taiwan’s official government news agency said.
If the meeting does occur, it would be the clearest signal yet of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s ambitions to reunify the democratic island, and of Beijing’s concerns about elections there in January.
The news agency said Mr. Xi would meet Taiwan’s President Ma Ying-jeou in Singapore. Chinese authorities made no such announcement and Chinese officials couldn’t be reached to comment. But Mr. Xi is due to visit Singapore on Friday and Saturday, according to China’s foreign ministry.
Phone calls to Taiwan’s presidential administration went unanswered.
WNU Editor: This meeting is historic in everyway. Chinese and Taiwanese businessmen and civilians have been interacting with each other and doing business since I was in China in the mid-1980s. But this meeting is a recognition on the political level .... and it is going to have an impact in the politics of both countries .... especially in the Chinese provinces across from Taiwan, and in Taiwan itself. This meeting is going to be held in Singapore this Saturday, and it will be the main news story in Asia this weekend .... Taiwan's Ma to meet China's Xi in Singapore (Nikkei Asian Review).
