U.S. Trying To Convince Arab Allies To Send Ground Troops Into Syria

Breitbart: US State Official: Arab Allies Considering Sending Ground Forces To Syria

WASHINGTON, D.C. — America’s Arab allies have discussed deploying their own ground forces to Syria to combat the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL), a senior U.S. State Department official told the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

“We’ve had lots of discussions with our gulf allies and with Jordan about the possibility of introducing ground troops,” Anne Patterson, assistant secretary for the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs at the State Department, told lawmakers on Wednesday.

Her comments are the latest sign that Russia’s military intervention has changed the dynamic of the nearly five-year-old Syrian civil war, notes the Washington Examiner.

“With the Islamic State gaining ground and Russian power now backing the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad, rebel groups backed by a U.S.-led coalition are being squeezed more tightly than ever, leaving Washington scrambling for ways to shore them up,” adds the article.

Patterson echoed a senior Department of Defense official who, while briefing reporters last Friday on condition of anonymity, indicated that some allies are interested in sending special operations forces into Syria.

Update: Arab countries weigh sending ground troops to Syria (Washington Examiner)

WNU Editor: Another story that has been completely under-reported in the press. The introduction of Arab ground forces into Syria is going to escalate the conflict in every-way, and it will be interpreted as an overt invasion by the Sunni Arab states into Syria. I can only imagine how the Syrian government of Assad, Iran, Russia, etc. will interpret such a military escalation, and the role that the U.S. is playing in promoting this.

Editor,respectfully,

It has nothing to do with interpretation. It will be a violation of Syrian sovereignty and international law. Just as the US and Turkish incursions into Syrian land and airspace are and continue to be. It's one of the reasons I believe the Russians have "accidentally" violated Turkish airspace; to let them know that they are no better than anyone else.

Nothing pisses a bully off more than that.

WNU Editor,

As the article makes clear, they have had "conversations",

The UAE is reportably withdrawing it's forces from Aden under the guise of a troop rotation,

Saudi Arabia and the GCC has been bogged down for months in Yemen, to the point they have had to hire fresh merc's,

I'm gonna guess that the conversations have gone as follows:

"Please?"

"No."

"Pretty please?"

"Hell no."

I concur Jay. The war in Yemen has been an eye-opener for these Arab states. But the Americans are persistent ... they want cover and support fort their Syrian foray.

Assad gave up his rights to sovereignty and protection of international law long ago.

I'm wondering if this means Canada will take a better stance on Russia too.

Not according to the UN Charter.

If a countries rights of Soverignity was based on R2P principals, the U.S. Would have lost it's rights in 1958.

There are many more brutal regimes in the ME than Assad's ever was, but they are US Allies, even if they sent Al Quida to bomb the WTC, even if they publically execute and crucify Bloggers.

Jay, you are right about Turkey. Time to post more on what is happening in that country .... especially vis-a-vis Syria and the Kurds.

And that's the thing. These people believe in their aberrant minds that rules, theirs or the UN's, only apply to others. When confronted with their hypocricy and resistance to their bullying they and their flunkies react with high fallutin moral indignation. After that come the threats of force (also illegal under nternational law), sanctions etc. Just like in the schoolyard "You gettin' mouthy with me boy?"

And that's why a BIG war is on the way. The only way to deal with a bully is to whoop their ass. Preferably in public.
