WSJ: Destroyer Makes First China Port Call Since U.S. Sailed Near Spratlys
The destroyer USS Stethem docked in Shanghai on Monday in the first U.S. port call in China since Washington said last month it had sailed near territory in the South China Sea claimed by Beijing.
The long-scheduled visit is billed as an opportunity to build communications and coordination between the nations’ navies. It got off to a shaky start: it required around an hour of effort from personnel from both navies to secure the 505-foot ship with ropes, delaying its official welcome.
As the gray ship arrived through mist at Wusong Military Port in northern Shanghai, U.S. sailors stood at attention along its decks. Around 75 Chinese sailors gripped a bilingual sign that said “Welcome US Navy Destroyer USS Stethem to Shanghai.”
